IMEC Corridor to Strengthen Karnataka’s Export Ecosystem Amid Global Trade Disruptions

The India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is emerging as a transformative development for Karnataka’s export landscape, offering a reliable alternative to traditional maritime routes such as the Suez Canal and Strait of Hormuz. As global trade faces increasing disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, the corridor is expected to enhance efficiency, reduce transit risks, and improve cost competitiveness for exporters across the state.

Karnataka, which ranks sixth in NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index 2024, holds an estimated untapped export potential of $24.4 billion. The IMEC is poised to unlock this potential by significantly reducing freight time—by up to 40%—and lowering logistics costs by nearly 30%. This improved connectivity is particularly crucial as exporters look to mitigate risks associated with volatile trade routes in West Asia, where shipment volumes have recently declined due to ongoing tensions.

The corridor is expected to provide a major boost to key export sectors in Karnataka, including telecom instruments, petroleum products, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. Additionally, agricultural exports such as coffee, spices, and millets are likely to benefit from faster and more reliable access to international markets.

To support exporters amid these evolving dynamics, several policy measures have been put in place. The government continues to streamline GST refund processes, ensuring that a significant portion of claims is processed within a short time frame, thereby improving liquidity for businesses. The Export Promotion Mission, with a substantial financial outlay, aims to strengthen the export ecosystem, particularly for MSMEs. Furthermore, support from the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) provides exporters with insurance coverage and safeguards against payment risks in uncertain global markets.

Karnataka is also actively enhancing its global trade presence through international collaborations and events. Initiatives such as global trade fairs and high-level engagements are helping the state attract investments and build stronger international partnerships, aligning with the long-term vision of IMEC.

Overall, the IMEC corridor represents a strategic opportunity for Karnataka to strengthen its position in global trade, offering exporters a more resilient, efficient, and future-ready pathway to international markets.
